The Critique Part 1 of 2
Critiquing art is one of the MOST IMPORTANT parts in the field of art. Understanding how to critique art helps an individual communicate in the language of artists. Art has a very unique vocabulary that artists, art critics and the general public use to analyze a piece of art. This term is called AESTHETIC SCANNING, or how your eye navigates the art piece in front of you. When you are critiquing another person's piece of art, you are trying to gain an understanding of why the artist created their piece the way that they did. The best way to do this is by asking YOURSELF questions about the piece. Some important questions to consider when critiquing are listed below:
WHY did the artist make the piece?
WHAT emotion was the artist trying to make me feel?
WHICH Rules of Composition are used? Are they used successfully?
WHAT materials did the artist use to make the piece?

Below is the piece "Starry Night" by Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. As we look at the piece, what questions should we begin to ask ourselves?
